Found an old Civil War canteen in the garage a few years ago and it appears to be an 1858 pattern smooth side. Has a black leather strap, chain is there but stopper is gone. The sides have no markings but are covered with a rough brown fabric. Is there any way to tell if it's Northern or Southern issue, or were they pretty much all the same?
