1862 CSN Courtney & Tennant cutlass

Could someone help me find information about a cutlass (?) in my collection. It has a brass handle with "Courtney & Tennant" and "Charleston, SC" marked around the hand guards. It is also marked "CSN" on the brass handle, which has a head in the shape of a shell. Although the handle is brass, the grip is bone. It has a date of "1862" on the bottom of the blade. It is approximately 28" long (I don't have it in front of me now to measure). From what I have read it should say "mole" somewhere on the blade, but I cannot locate this marking anywhere.

Anything would help - a web site, a book, etc. I can't find any information anywhere.
