I was wondering with the prevalence of smooth bore long arms especially early in the war; how were they loaded? Were they loaded with a single ball, buckshot, or the old mix of buck & ball? A sub point to this is, if they were loaded with buck & ball what was the number of buckshot used? I have seen numerous references to earlier fights were the load included three buckshot but I have more recently seen a pre-war reference to seven buckshot. (I can't find the quote to cite) Thanks for the help.
