They shot both single ball and the buck and ball in the .69 cal smoothbore. The Buck and ball consisted of one large ball and three buckshot on top of the ball. The load with all buck shot was most likely a shotgun load.

In the below picture is a .69 cal ball shot as buck and ball. If you look closely you can see the indentations of the three buckshot on the top of the ball.
