This photo would have been taken just prior to the battles of Crampton's Gap and South Mountain. In fact, the infamous General Lee's Special Orders No. 191 were inadvertently found during this march trough Frederick, alerting McClellan to Lee's plans. The Confederate units present were D. H. Hills Division and Longstreet's, of which Hood's Brigade was assigned. My understanding is that Hood's unit left Frederick on the 11th and marched to Boonsboro. If the photo was in fact taken on the 12th, I don't believe Hood's brigade could be the unit as they passed throught the day before.
