Re: Unexploded James Shell With No Gunpowder insid

Although double-charging the quartermaster or providing a lower grade uniform cloth {Shoddy)was a great and enduring game (and one that goes on 'til this very day, I live in DC)my take is that it was maybe too hard to get up the hill (it was found next to (6'?) a steep grade on (old) Chain Bridge Road not far from Battery Kemball, a two 100pdr Parrott Rifle site as one of a line of (the only) interior defenses within the ring of forts (see BF Cooling, Mr Lincoln's Forts. So I'm thinking lazy, careless, or end-of-war-going-home-get-rid-of-it. Two questions: (1) where was the James shell fused? On the exterior? Or inside somehow up against the anterior part of the conical nose? Were they Wiard fuses...or something else? Second is, I'm going to be at Fort Leonard Wood Tueasday after next and would make a side trip to Pea Ridge. Would your friend be available to talk to me about this? I'd sure like to talk to him...I'm writing a book and I've got a LOT of questions about that battle. Let me know! Bob Meffert
