CS 3rd Lt rank ensignia???

Hello again,

I wasn't sure where to post this question so I reckon this one is good enough: I was wondering of you could answer a question for me. My great great grandfather worked his way from Sergeant up to 3rd Lieutenant. 3rd Lt was a rank peculiar only to our dear CS Government and army. I don't think the Union Army had such a rank. He was discharged due to health reason in the winter of 1861-1862. He came back to frozen Virginia after a month furloughe and was immediately sent on Pickett duty. After being on Pickett duty with his men he got sick and wound up with Pneumonia and almost died.

Anyway, my question is this; What would a 3rd Lieutenant wear for insignia? I know a 1st Lt wore two bars on collar and one "Chicken Gut" on sleeve and a 2nd Lt only one bar with the chicken gut. But what about a 3rd Lt?? Would he wear just the chicken gut and no bar or what?

The reason I am asking this is because I am planning on having a portrait done of him in uniform so I want it to be right. I have a good pic of him so the artist will put paint him in a uniform the details of which I will provide.
Any help or info would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
David Edelen
