Bayonet care

Novice question time. I was given a mid 19th century British socket bayonet (I am assuming it acompanied a P53 Enfield back in the day) that was dug up in the California desert about six months ago. The bayonet in question is in pretty good condition (a certain amount of patination and piting the business end is abit crumpled). I know that I should leave it in the condition that it is in, but I assume that I should oil it to keep it in its present condition. If this is so, what is the best oil to use and where should I get it?
