Re: Reith knapsack
In Response To: Reith knapsack ()

According to "Richmond Volunteers 1861 - 1865" by Louis H. Manarin and Lee A. WallaceJr. Mr Reith was a saleman for Messrs Kent, Paine and Co. a dry goods supplier in Richmond, VA. The knapsack was patented by Mr Reith in the Confederate States so presumably the records should be in the U.S> National Archives if they survive. The patent knapsacks do not appear to have survived for very long as the Richmond Zouaves were reported to be "without tents or camp equipage and with but the clothing on their backs" by Gen. Jackson on 24 Jul 1861.

NB the Zouaves wore white canvas gaiters made by a Mr. F. Thomas of Richmond.
