The field guns used in the civil war were different than the revolutionalry war period cannons. The civil war field piece designiation of a smoothbore howitzer such as "12-pounder" is not the actual weight of the projectile. For example, of the 130 field guns made at the Augusta Aresnal many were 12-pound, 4.62" smoothbore howitzers, using 1.00 pound of Fg powder, firing a round ball which actually weighed 8.90 pounds. However, the actual weight of a smoothbore cannon (not howitzer) projectile is very close to the common designation.
