Initially equipped with poles and clubs in training, they received an assortment of worn out muskets and "german" rifles. In Baltimore around October or November of 1861, they exchanged their gray uniforms with black trim for regulation Federal blue. Companies K and H ordered Merrill rifles from the James A. Merrill factory in Baltimore and received these when shipping out for Fortress Monroe in early 1862. Companies A and B were issued Enfields in Baltimore. Additional Enfields were received at Fortress Monroe. By the time of the Battle of Baton Rouge, most men had Enfields, except for companies H and K who had Merrills. In mid-to-late 1864 and during early 1865 they received Springfields.
