Re: ACC buttons - dispelling a myth

I received a copy of the letter today. It was an email letter from Scovill. I was not able to get a copy of the email sent to Scovill, but the question was something to the nature of did the ACC buttons go to U of A, or Albany, or elsewhere (and a photo of the button was included in the email to Scovill).

Here is the reply from Scovill:

Dear Mr. XXXX,

Thank you for your email of January 29 that has been forwarded to me for a response.

We often receive inquiries like yours requesting that we identify a button. More often than not we are unable to because although we have representative samples of many of the metal sew-on buttons made in the past by Scovill there is no catalogue of reference.

In your case, however, I can identify the button to be one made for the Alabama Corps of Cadets (University of Alabama) that were manufactured by Scovill in Waterbury, CT during the 1850's.

I hope that information helps you.

Judging from this response, the order must have been placed/filled in 1859, in anticipation of the implementation of the Alabama Cadet Corps in 1860. Unless someone finds a uniform from Albany that has these buttons on it, then I think that this question has been resolved, as Scovill does not indicate any order from any other organization for this button style.

Also, I found an indication that the button collector books *may* say (I don't have copies of these books) that they may have been from the "Albany Citizen Corps", rather than the Albany Academy Cadet Battalion. However, I have found no evidence of the existence of such an organization in the 19th Century or early 20th Century. There is such an organization in existence now, however, it was formed under Bill Clinton's citizen corps initiative.
