Hello, this issue came up around the old camp fire at a recent reenactment - did soldiers in their spare time (in camp, as compared to campaign) knit??

My feeling is yes, for two reasons, one - earn a bit of money making socks, mittens, etc. two - do something to not get as bored as if they did not knit.

Now, the hard issue - is there any documentation, articles, letters, etc about soldiers knitting?
Inquiring mind wishes to know.
