When Robert E. Lee moved the making of the carbine from Richmond to Tallasse, was civilian factory workers sent or only military personal?
My GGGrandfather John C. Matthews moved his family from the Richmond, Virginia area to Tallassee in 1863-65 time period where his son Edwin L. was born in Tallassee. Family oral history says John was serving under Robert E. Lee by I have not come across with any proof of that, but have heard that many civilian work with the troops. Is there any way to confirm the workers?
