This is a rare weapon! One which is generally not known by most Civil war enthusiasts. It's a two shooter! Developed by J. P. Lindsay in 1860.The musket is loaded in the normal manner, and then the process is repeated.Both hammers are then drawn back, but no matter which position the hammers are in , the right-hand hammer always falls first.The fire from the cap is transferred to the foreword powder-charge, with the rear ball acting as a gas check for the foreword charge. A second pull of the trigger sends an ignition to the second(rear) charge. Usually powder fouling prevented a second shot. The weapon was NOT a success. And yes only about 1,000 were made as the government had no interest. A specimen is probably quite valuable because it was an oddity, much like the short lived Athens double barrell cannon. The Civil War was a time for innovation when it came to weapons but some were considered too "off the wall" as it were. The Lindsay Rifled musket, model 1863 was one.
