Re: Confederate Kepis

"Kepi" is an accurate term for the time. It is French. Kepis were caps with a lower crown than forage caps. Most Confederates preferred slouch hats to keep the sun and rain off their heads (usually aquired from home or sutlers) however kepis were issued depending on the location/depot/time period. Tight fitting, low crowned "caps" with visors or brims were called "kepis". They were as varied in color and design as everything else back then. Chin straps, buckles, insignia, it just depends on when and where. Good comment from Jim.........."let's not complicate things" They might not have been the headwear of choice but their evidence is abundant. Yanks sometimes called them "cover" as in "remove your cover" or "uncover" (prayer, etc.) "Way back then" if you didn't have your cover, you were out of uniform. Same today.
