I agree that it is entirely possible that some slings were equipped with another style buckle. I have heard there is one,however, I haven't ever been able to find one at shows or in pictures or anyone who has dug another style. Based on frequency of use, IMO, the flat top buckle pictured is the most commonly found and shown in period pictures.
