brass hollow ball

A friend of mine that lives on part of the Newtonia Battlefield (newtonia Mo.) was given some items by a neighbor that were said to have been found on his property. One item He asked me to check out is a round brass hollow ball. It measures 3.390 to 3.450 in diameter. It has a one inch hole in it, with a cast boss about 1" tall inside which is drilled and tapped app.1\4 20. The wall thickness is app. 1\4". It has a very dark petina. when I checked the metal it is brass of some kind. Has anyone ever seen such an item? I have nothing in my collection or in any of my books that resemble it. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Larry
