The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

Most of the Virginia cavalry supplied their own horses throughout much of the war- I have read several accounts of men who had lost their horses going into Union lines on foot in order to capture another horse. I have also been told that the Confederate government would reimburse a soldier for his horse lost in battle but a hoof had to be presented as proof of it's death. There was a terrible shortage of cavalry weapons at the beginning of the war, but much of the shortage was made up with captured and imported weapons. Uniformity in weaponry was seldom seen in Confederate units, except when a large number of weapons were captured at once.
