Thanks all for the great responses. It's my intention to use all original parts if possible. I discussed it with a number of people, and a guy at a gun show gave the most telling comment; he said why not spend a few hundred more to make the gun all original, considering the difference in finished value. I thought about that and then started accumulating original parts. The day the brass trigger guard arrived I was like a kid at Christmas. Wrong number, of course, but it's real, and that's the important part to me. I know the grips are going to be hard to find, but they don't have to be in great condition. The gun is a little rough in spots, and the grips should be plenty worn to match. Of course, I could fit and 'age' some repro grips, but I hope I don't have to. I'll post a couple of pics of it later. It's an interesting variant, as it has the correct notched loading lever and German silver cone adjustable front sight, but some long-ago armorer or perhaps Remington installed a screw in the channel of the loading lever, the exposed head of which retains the cylinder pin when the lever is closed. This was probably done to bring the gun into compliance with the Army's requirements for the 'New Army', as a transition strategy. The cylinder also has the safety notches required by the Army. Because I know for a fact the gun is genuine and unaltered (except for attempted destruction by kids) since the Civil War, I have to conclude that these were period modifications. The really good news is that all parts I need are the exact same as for the New Army, of which there were many more made. Sadly, Tom (the previous owner) tells me he remembers that the whole rig was there at one time, holster and all, but it's all long gone, along with the original small parts. The old Yankee was a Mainer, and Tom has researched his Army service. I'll post his unit later as I don't remember it now.
