Camouflage- Before the Civil War, armies did not use camouflage, but wore bright, flashy uniforms serving the purposes of intimidating the enemy, bolstering unit cohesion, and helping soldiers to know who was on their side, preventing friendly fire. With the invention of black powder before the Civil War, gun smoke created huge, billowing clouds of smoke through which it was virtually impossible to see. However, black powder gives off very little smoke when ignited, greatly reducing the amount of smoke hanging over the battle field. With this technology, it was no longer necessary to wear bright uniforms, so armies switched to dull blues, greens, and grays, with which to better blend into their environment.
