Strange Weapon-J.R. Graves Tenn.

can anyone help me on this strange anti-cavalry weapon?

Mentioned on March 18, 1862 "Job M. Foxworth Diary" Co D 7th Regt. Miss. Inf near Corinth Miss.
Excerpt from my manuscript "Lest We Forget-the Immortal Seventh Mississippi"

New Weapon against Cavalry

“I noticed on the platform at the depot a good number of spikes with [a board], I suppose to cut the reins of cavalry horses. I doubt not when well constructed they are a formidable, dangerous, and destructive weapon. J.R. Graves, the celebrated Babtist preacher from Nashville, Te., is trying now to raise a regiment armed with such weapons. At the entrance of the Yankees into Nashville his property, a printing office, etc., fell into their hands. He was absent and never went back. The paper is, of course, suspended.” .[JFDiary transcription. pp. 128-134]
