Comparing the caliber of civil war weapons with modern weapons is a bit like comparing apples to oranges though. There are far more differences between them than the caliber. One of the many however is the type of powder used to fire the cartridge or ball.

Saying a .50 caliber sniper rifle and a .58 rifle musket are similar is to completely miss the point...
