Oddest looking Civil War holsters I ever bought

I have seen many Civil War era pistol holsters, but these have me puzzeled. Anyone know exactly what they are? THought maybe they attached to a saddle. What ever they are, they are both hooked together and the barrel end to the holster point in opposite directions. So the double holster has to hang drooped over something. They will not fit around a person, maybe draped over the shoulder, but then on would be hanging on your back side...Got me puzzled

The first picture is how the go together, the other pics is not how they would hang.

THis link shows how the holster hooks into the other part, maybe a flap cover that may be for wheather protection?
