I am not certain, but I believe "commissary guard" is a temporary duty meaning the soldier named was ordered to guard the commissary supplies from pilferage. Basically, he guarded the food supplies. I suppose it is possible that such a soldier may have been assigned to that duty for a prolonged period of time as part of the commissary department of that command.
