The reason I asked about it being an Enfield is that most Enfield lockplates were case hardned and resist cleaning. If you must clean the lock plate I would use some bore cleaner and lightly rub with 0000 steel wool. After you remove the dirt I would stop and not try and remove the aged patina. When you do that it is difficult to achieve an even patina.
