The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

PLEAZE HELP

Hi there people Im new to this message board. I had a few questions for someone who knows there Civil War weapons. My father just recently passed away and I got all of his belongings. One of the items I received was a sword that attaches to the end of a gun, I know what the sword is called I just want to be sparred the humiliation of spelling it "beonet" LOL anyway the blade is in almost perfect condition the sheith (I think thats what it is called) is a little worn, as well as the brass handle is a little tarnished. The blade has an inscription on it I can't make out the cursive writing on it I believe its a name or place or something. The inscription was not by the manufacture it was post production. The only thing I can make out is a Date 1861 and another number but not in date form reading 1843. Im pretty sure the 1843 was not a date but 1861 was. Now I don't know alot about the Civil War but maybe it was some sort a platoon number or something. Any way I was curious if one of you would be able to tell me alittle about the sword and if I have a treasure here I've asked around I know its not fake. Do any of you know if its worth anything? I mean the blade was stuck in the sheith for who knows how long and its only just been exposed to the air for the first time in a long time. I watched the antique road show and seen an almost identical 1 minus a few details. The mans swords was without the sheith and inscription and in poor condition the appraiser said there would have to be more studying of where the sword came from meaning I believe the north or the south. but his prices ranged from $200 to $9000. So thank you for your time and please get back to me. Iwish I could send a picture but I can't through this message board, so we got to work with what we got.

Thanks From Young and clueless
