Need help identifying a sword

I am trying to identify a sword that has been in my family for many years. It may have belonged to my g-g-grandfather, Jerard Hanks, who was a confederate soldier in Virginia in the Danville Artillery. The sword has only this engraved on it: A.R.55. It is 35" long.
I will attach a picture to this message. Anyone who can help me identify it please post a reply or contact me through email: hanks@sitestar.net Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
