Just read your message today....I'm not an expert but I believe you have a rifle used at the end of the Civil War. It
is a carbine, I believe, from your listed barrel length. Do you know what type of cartridge it takes? I would assume it
was a linen wrapped slug like the earlier Sharps( i.e. model 1859). It sounds like a nice piece to have in the family and
as so many people look for the provenance of who owned it back then, it is run to find such info.

It certainly is not a Berdan model since they were long rifles, made especially for the Sharpshooters with dbl. set triggers,
specific serial number sequence, etc. I am in Florida for the winter and return to our regular home in Maine in May. There
I have the books about the Berdan divisions, weapons, specific markings, etc. If you want, I can look up such info when
I'm back home.(Oh, try to determine the exact caliber.....that would be important)
