On page 50 of the Charlie Harris book - "Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns 1861-1865" you will see a dug example.

Somebody might have been testing this one out - it has what looks like a .44 pistol bullet dent in it and two BIG OL' holes blown right through the plate.
