8th Texas Cavalry sidearms, 1865

The service file of Lieut. Isaac Fulkerson Co. "B", 8th Texas Cavalry, includes a receipt for ordnance supplies issued at Cheraw SC, March 1, 1865. Lieut. Fulkerson received 210 cal. 36 cartridges for Colt Navy revolvers, and 300 cal. 44 cartridges for Kerr revolvers. It would be interesting to know how many officers and men were then with his company in the Carolinas.

Fulkerson wrote "cal. 38" for his Colt Navys. He almost certainly meant cal. 36. The Kerr revolver was produced exclusively for Confederate service by the London Armory Co.

Capt. L. Jacquelin Smith, ordnance officer for General Lafayette McLaws, signed this receipt. One of 340 documents in Capt. Smith's military service file shows that he issued 13 boxes (1,000 cartridges ea.) to Lt. J. A. Miller, acting ordnance officer for McLaws Division, March 20, 1865. Ammunition was described as cal. 54, probably for imported Lorenz rifles.
