Gerald:

The Austrian Bullet in some ways was better than the Minnie because of it's design...
Per Greg Edington:

"The Lorenz bullet uses inertia, gas and compression to expand and engage the rifling. The Lorenz bullet is a variation of the Wilkinson design tested at Hythe in 1852. The bullet has a heavy pointed nose with series of wedges below it. The powder gases drive the lighter wedges into the heavier nose that resists moving because of its inertia. The wedges compress and expand to fill the bore/rifling. The two major types of the Austrian bullets for the Lorenz were the Mk.1 and Mk.2.
The Mk.1 is flat based and was used up to 1857. The Mk.2 is an improved design with double side wedges, a dished base designed to help increase expansion. Apparently, both the CSA and USA used a small amount since the bullets have been found on battlefield (The rare "new Austrian" bullet) were bullet hunters prize them as rarities."
