I have read, that in general Confederate infantry company officers toward the end of the war (64-65) some officers got rid of the sword to be less visible to sharpshooters on the Yankee side. Some also took to carrying rifles to provide additional fire power when needed. Can not cite this tho, don't recollect where I read it.
