German Rifle?

A few years ago, a nice gentleman named Mike Bailey with a copy of Todd's AME, informed me that one of my Union ancestor's regiments, the 22nd Indiana Infantry, was successively armed with "Old Muskets", October 1861 - German Rifles, 1862 - Austrian Rifles, 1863 - Enfield Rifles and 1864-65 - Springfield Rifles.

How might I find out specifically which "German Rifles" they were issued? I know there were Suhls and Dresdens, etc., but what I want to know is does anyone have any information or evidence of exactly which model, caliber, date German Rifle the 22nd Indiana Infantry was issued in October 1861.

I am also considering purchasing an example of one of these guns, so if someone is aware of a "1830-ish" Suhl/Dresden rifle, please make me aware.

Thanks,

Jim Martin
