The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

Civil War Optics and Lenses

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is intended to generate some discussion on Civil War Optics and Lenses. Three pieces of equipment that I am interested in are telescopes, binoculars, and eye glasses.

Telescopes were used by the signal corps to observe troop movements at long range, etc. Engineers also used them for surveying.

Binoculars were used by cavalry and leaders at various levels to observe at intermediate ranges.

Eye glasses were of course used by the individual soldier.

Some of the things that I have been interested in is lenses grinding of the time period, typical maginifications, and manufacturers.

I am looking forward to the discussions.

Respectfully,
