I would add that it would also matter what part of the field and time of the battle you are depicting in your reconstruction. The spearhead of the attack was made mostly of veteran Confederate units (3rd Corps under Hardee). Most had been in service since July and August 1861 and many had seen combat. Also I believe, contrary to popular belief, that these troops in the front were armed with the latest Enfield Rifles and equipage fresh off the boat from England (my reference---Going to Meet The Yankees, A History of the "Bloody Sixth" Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. page 74.
