Bob,

Your question about "battle tactics" in the Civil War is very broad indeed. Infantry, cavalry and artillery tactics can easily be separate, detailed discussions unto themselves.

Any discussion of infantry tactics must begin with a foundation of linear tactics. But the exceptions to this rule (column of attack, Indian rush, etc.) are numerous. As someone already well-versed in the subject as you have described yourself, you certainly can appreciate how the subject of battle tactics in the American Civil War can, and has, filled numerous books.

Two of the best of these books, in my opinion, are "Battle Tactics of the Civil War" by Paddy Griffith and, more recently, "The Bloody Crucible of Courage: Fighting Methods and Combat Experience of the Civil War" by Brent Nosworthy. You have doubtless read these already. For those who have not, they are well worth reading.

Best regards,

Mike
