Help with a sword

I have recently been contacted by a person who has a family member in possesion of what they describe as a sword or machete that was carried in the war by Capt. Augustus F. Davis of the 7th Mississippi infantry. They are trying to convince the family member in actual possesion of the sword to let us post a pic of it on our website. Anyway, there seems to be some confusion as to some engravings on the sword. They tell me it has the initials... W.A.T. as well as a date, either 1857 or 1847. The family is indeed Captain Davis's descendents.

They asked me to give an opinion on this and I am not capable of that but suggested this...

If the date is 1857 I have no idea what to think.

If the date is 1847 could this have been a Mexican War sword?

Would it be a good guess to say that if it is indeed from the Mexican War period it may have belonged to a relative of Captain Davis by those initials, W.A.T.

I know I am asking a lot here but any help is appreciated.
