Recently I detected a number of Colt Revolving Rifle bullets at a picket site in the western theater. To me, the bullet is so rare, I decided to do a little research on which regiments were issued this weapon in 1861 - 1862 with the idea of trying to pin down what regiment occupied the site. My research has turned that only 21 us infantry regiments were issued the weapon over the course of the war and the total issued was 4600 including 29 Cavalry regiments and 1 CS Cav. Regiment. There my research trail goes cold. Can anyone tell me what regiments were issued the rifle in 1861 to 1862? I know that Ninth Iowa and the 37th Illinois ("Fremont's Rifles") had at least 2 companies each of these weapons.
Thanks
