My son-in-law has inherited a Remington New Model Army pistol, Serial Number 38069. it came with its holster made by J.E. Conduct, 67 West ..., New York,New York.
We think his ancestor served in an Illinois Cavalry regiment.
The cap-and- ball pistol still has two balls in the cylinder, fortunately no caps. The pistol and holster both look like originals from civil war.
Could the Serial Number be used trace any Federal Army purchase of this pistol to an Illinois cavalry unit? Any help would be appreciated.
