Confederate soldier functioning as "marker"

Long time no post!

Just ran across a Confederate private in the 16th MS Infantry who was noted as serving as a "marker."

I know about the use of markers to mark the left and right flank of Union regiments when drawn up in line of battle and I know that sergeants typically fulfilled this function in said armies.

However, I've never noted the use of markers in Confederate units.

Does anyone have anything to contribute on the subject of markers in Confederate armies? Would a Confederate private have typically carried such markers? Were Confederate markers typically smaller than regimental colors, as in the Union army?

Thanks! -- Jim Huffman, Picayune, MS
