Re: Enfield No-Tower Rifle Question

Mike,

If the numbers in the date are italicized (slanting slightly to the right instead of directly perpendicular), you may have a Belgian made P/53, as these locks usually displayed only the year of manufacture to the right of the hammer. Liege (Belgium) made locks also generally have a small star separating the letters of the royal monogram VR, when these initials are present on the lock below the crown.

However, one is liable to find an Enfield rifle (or rifle musket) with almost any variation of lock markings, including Tower above the date or below the date, no date, no Tower, VR, no VR, and even no markings at all on the face of the lock -- not to mention Enfield, LAC, Windsor, etc.

Best,

Mike
