From the information you've provided, it sounds as if you possibly may have found the remains of an Enfield rifle or rifle musket.

If the marking in the stock near the trigger guard tang is indeed a "JS Anchor", then you have a Confederate-purchased Enfield from England ... as some of the early Confederate Enfields were marked with the JS Anchor cypher.

However, if the other marks are "D Anchor C", the Belgian made "Brazilian Light Minie" rifle bears this mark, which has been tentatively identified as the maker's mark of the Liege firm of O.P. Drissen & Cie. The D Anchor C is not a Confederate inspection mark.

Thus the marks seem to conflict. If you would like to e-mail some close-up digital photos of the parts and their markings, I will examine them closely and give you a further opinion.
