The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

CSA Equipment Identification

Hello,
My name is Neal Griffin. I maintain a website on the 9th Georgia Infantry. The 9th Ga. was part of "Tige" Anderson's Brigade (the 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 59th Georgia Regiments),in Hood's (later Fields' Divsion) of Longstreet's Corps, ANV. The site is at:

I recently bought a brass stencil on eBay from a man in Virginia that says the stencil was dug on ground on the retreat close to Appomattox. The stencil is about 4" by 4 1/2", made of brass, and says G 9. The Va. man says he thought is was from the 9th Georgia Brigade (no such unit to my knowledge), and was used to identify equipment belonging to it. I have posted this stencil at:

I am not an expert on these kind of things. Is it possible that this was used to identify a regiment's property? Any ideas, suggestions, or leads on who may know more about this is sincerely appreciated.
