Re: 1863 Spencer Carbine
In Response To: Re: 1863 Spencer Carbine ()

I'm also tracing a Spencer that belongs to my uncle, I looked on the Springfield website but could only find Rifle serial numbers, not carbines.

This weapon sounds similar to John's. I have not seen this gun, my uncle lives in Connecticut, and I in Michigan. We've spoken on the phone and he is sending me pictures of the Carbine, a Colt pistol and a sabre.

My Ggranfather Charles Goodell] gave him these weapons about 50 years ago but did not say who they belonged to.

I have 3 possibilities
Gabriel Goodell 1st Mich.Cav.
Elijah Goodell 5th Mich.Cav.
Charles Goodell 9th Mich.Cav.

My understanding is the 1st and 5th Mich.Cav's had Spencer rifles but the 9th Mich. Cav were issued Spencer Carbines, does any one know?
Here's the info he sent me and if anyone could assist me with the pistol I would greatly appreciate it. My uncle also tells me he can find no markings on th sabre.

Spencer Repeating Rifle [does not specify year]
Manufactured at Providence R.I.
Burnside Rifle Company
Patented March 5,1860
Serial #4936

Colt Pistol [no further info.]
Patent #2700
Serial #62700
