Last year at the Cedar Creek reenactment, I ran across a young lad on the field clad in Confederate gray with a red cross on his left shoulder. I stopped him to inquire (as I just knew he was gonna tell me he was a confederate hospital steward) but he surprised me and said it was a confederate sharpshooter badge. I have to admit I have never heard of it either but it definitely bears looking into.
