Re: "SH/C" or SH/G" on Enfield wood -- how to tell

There are various interpretations of these marks, mainly because the letters are often not clear. But on those that are clear, two styles emerge:

1. Crown / SH / G# (the # being a 1-digit numeral). This marking was most likely for Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, importers for the North (this appears to be the mark on this gun).

2. Crown / S / HC / Arrow (a small horizontal arrow pointing toward the right). This would be for Sinclair, Hamilton & Co., importers for the South.

I am aware that some Enfields have the SH/G# mark where the G appears to be a C (I've seen these myself), but on most, it is clearly a G. In any case, the ID would seem to lie with the style of the marking (as above), and not necessarily which letter it looks like.
