Re: Union Soldier Sends Message On Minie Ball

Recently I received a copy of a new book, "Vicksburg and the War," written by Gordon A. Cotton and Jeff T. Giambrone. On page 70 of the book there is an enlarged photograph of a Union minie ball. The caption under the photo reads: "Before firing this Minie ball at the Confederates near the railroad redoubt [Vicksburg], the Union soldier carved a message on it: "FROM GRANT." It is part of the Old Court House Museum Collections."

In the photo of the 3-ring minie ball, I was able to make out the letters GRA, but the other letters can't be seen as they wrap around the ball.

I have visited the Old Court House Museum at Vicksburg several times, but I don't recall seeing that unusual minie ball, but will take a look at it the next time I'm there. Those of you that haven't visited the museum are in for a real treat, should you have an opportunity to do so. The collection of C.W. artifacts there is the best I've ever seen. .....Joe Ashley
