If anyone can help, i'd like to find online illustrations of CW iron/steel helmets, which i've also read of. Please email me direct, don't post here.

The body armor was probably just mild steel or iron. If it had been properly hardened steel it could have provided a measure of protection against the relatively low velocity, unjacketed pure lead bullets of the era.
