Re: .58-caliber "Minie Muskets" of 30th Mississipp

Art: Thanks for answering my query and for your question about the 30th's service. After Col. Gilbreath F. Neill formed the regiment (763 men) at Grenada, Miss. during April 1862, it reported as a new regiment at Corinth in the Army of the Mississippi and was in the retreat from Corinth to a camp near Tupelo. The 30th saw its first major action in Bragg's army at Perryville, Kentucky, on Oct. 8. After Nov. 22, 1862, the regiment served in the Army of Tennessee and fought in numerous battles until the war's end. Among those battles and campaigns were the following: Murfreesboro (Stones River); Tullahoma Campaign; Chickamauga; Chattanooga Campaign (Lookout Mountain & Missionary Ridge); Atlanta Campaign (under field consolidation with the 29th Miss.); and Hood's Tennessee Campaign. Also, remnants of the 30th Miss. were involved in the actions during the Carolinas Campaign. On 9 April 1865, the remnants of the 30th and four other Miss. regiments were reorganized into the 24th Miss. under the command of Col. Robert W. Williamson. On 3 May, the Army of Tennessee's three corps received their paroles at Greensboro, N.C. and marched fifty miles southwest to Salisbury. From there they separated into three columns and left for their homes by different routes. By the war's end the 30th Miss. had established a reputation for its "dash, brilliancy, and courage." ..Joe Ashley
